What Is the Nurse Aids Training Program?
The Nurse Aids Training Program is a two-year initiative that prepares young people for essential healthcare support roles. Trainees learn patient care, first aid, hygiene practices, and basic medical procedures under the guidance of experienced healthcare professionals. Many graduates now serve in clinics, hospitals, and remote villages across Kaw Thoo Lei, helping fill the shortage of medical workers in conflict-affected areas.
Why Was There an Urgent Need for Local Health Workers?
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Karen communities faced severe challenges. With limited access to hospitals and restricted travel, many families struggled to care for infected members on their own. The situation revealed a major gap in local healthcare capacity and showed how much the region needed trained community health workers.
How Did YPD Respond During the Crisis?
To support the community in this critical time, YPD Karenland organized a one-month emergency medical training for youth from seven villages. The goal was to quickly prepare young Karen people with basic nursing and caregiving skills so they could help their families and neighbors during the outbreak.
What Did the Participants Learn?
Under the guidance of volunteer doctors and medical trainers, participants learned key skills such as patient care, first aid, emergency response, sanitation practices, and basic health education. When the trainees returned to their villages, they became trusted helpers who provided care, shared accurate health information, and supported families when clinics were inaccessible.
Who Supported This Initiative?
The emergency program was made possible through the support of partners including the Korean Hope Foundation and Akasaa Malaysia. Their assistance helped provide medical supplies, training materials, and other essential resources that strengthened local resilience and saved lives.
How Did This Training Grow Into a Long-Term Program?
The success of the emergency training led YPD Karenland to officially establish the two-year Nurse Aids Training Program. Today, this program continues to grow and supports YPD’s mission to build stronger, healthier, and more self-reliant Karen communities. New trainees continue to carry forward a spirit of service and compassionate care.

What Is the Agriculture Training Program?
Agriculture plays a major role in the lives of rural families, and many young people depend on farming for their future. The Agriculture Training Program by YPD Karenland was created to help youth gain the skills they need to grow food, support their families, and build strong, healthy communities. This program combines both traditional farming knowledge and modern, sustainable techniques, allowing young farmers to learn in a practical and meaningful way.
Learning Traditional and Modern Farming Skills
Participants in the program are trained in a variety of useful and hands-on techniques. They learn how to grow important crops such as corn, vegetables, and rice, while also understanding how to care for soil and protect the environment. The training emphasizes eco-friendly practices, teaching youth how to increase productivity without harming the land.
By learning both old and new methods, trainees become confident in managing farms that are sustainable and productive.
Supporting the Community Through Local Produce
One of the meaningful parts of this program is the way it supports the community. The crops grown through training activities—such as vegetables, corn, and rice—are sold locally to people in nearby villages. Community members are often happy to purchase these products because they know the money earned goes directly back into YPD Karenland’s training programs and community activities.
This support helps us continue our work, assist those in need, and create opportunities for future trainees.
The Agriculture Training Program is more than just farming; it is about building stronger communities, empowering young people, and sharing knowledge across generations. With each season, the program continues to grow—nurturing new skills, creating new opportunities, and helping families move toward a more secure and sustainable future.

Motorcycles and small vehicles are lifelines in Karenland, especially in remote and mountainous regions. Our auto-repair training equips youth with hands-on skills in repairing and maintaining motorcycles and other vehicles. In addition to technical training, students also learn about customer service and small workshop management.

This program combines traditional Karen weaving with modern tailoring skills. Participants learn how to design and create clothing, handicrafts, and household products, blending cultural heritage with contemporary styles. Training covers everything from fabric selection and sewing machine operation to marketing handmade goods. These skills empower youth, especially young women, to start home-based businesses, contribute to their household income, and keep cultural traditions alive.

In today’s world, digital literacy is essential. Our computer training program introduces youth to basic digital skills, including word processing, spreadsheets, email communication, and online research. Advanced modules cover applied computer skills such as graphic design, data management, and internet safety. With these skills, young people gain access to new education opportunities, remote jobs, and stronger communication with the global community.

YPD Karenland believes that creativity is a powerful tool for development and healing. Our music and arts program provides training in guitar, singing, cultural dance, and performance. Youth learn to express themselves, preserve Karen traditions, and build confidence through artistic expression. Performances are often shared at community events, spreading joy and promoting cultural pride while offering potential career paths in music and the arts.

A simple skill can change a life. Our barber shop training teaches haircutting, grooming, and hygiene practices, alongside lessons in customer service and small business management. This program enables youth to set up their own barber shops or provide mobile haircut services in remote villages. Affordable grooming services not only create income but also improve dignity and self-care within the community.

Food brings people together, and it also provides livelihoods. Our training in cooking, baking, and food preparation helps young people develop the skills needed to work in restaurants, bakeries, or small catering services. Trainees learn everything from safe food handling to menu planning and business management. Many participants use these skills to start small eateries or food stalls, contributing to local economies and creating community gathering spaces.

Healthcare access in Karenland is often limited. This program trains youth to support local health services through basic pharmacy management and clinic assistance. Participants learn how to provide basic medicines, organize supplies, and assist healthcare professionals in village clinics. By producing trained community health aides, YPD Karenland strengthens healthcare networks and helps address urgent medical needs in rural areas.

Sustainable livelihoods are at the heart of community resilience. Our livelihood projects involve raising pigs, ducks, chickens, and fish, as well as producing eggs and other food products. Training covers animal husbandry, resource management, and small business planning. These projects provide food security for families and offer youth pathways to generate steady income while contributing to their community’s wellbeing.

An Overview of the Mobile Clinic Support Program
The Mobile Clinic Support Program plays a vital role in ensuring that communities in conflict-affected and hard-to-reach areas have access to essential health services. In many regions of Karen State, families face daily challenges due to conflict, difficult terrain, and limited transportation. These barriers often prevent them from reaching hospitals or clinics.
To respond to these urgent needs, YPD Karenland brings healthcare directly to the people. The program focuses on providing immediate medical support while strengthening community awareness and resilience through health education.
How the Mobile Clinic Reaches Communities
The strength of the mobile clinic comes from its combined team of trained youth volunteers and medical professionals. They travel to remote villages to offer services such as basic health checkups, first aid, medicine distribution, and guidance on health and hygiene.
By involving local youth, the program not only delivers medical care but also builds future leaders who can support their communities in times of crisis. Their dedication reflects YPD Karenland’s commitment to serving those who are most vulnerable.
Where the Mobile Clinic Is Serving Today
Although the program supports several areas, it is currently most active in Ar Nan Gway, Kyar Aye Saint Gyi, where conflict remains intense and healthcare access is nearly impossible.
Residents living in these villages face constant risks and limited support, making the mobile clinic a lifeline for children, elders, and families. Volunteers work with determination to ensure that medical care reaches those who need it most, even under challenging conditions.
Focusing on these high-risk areas allows YPD Karenland to provide consistent, meaningful assistance where the needs are greatest.
Growing the Program Toward Sustainability
The Mobile Clinic Support Program was originally supported by donor funding. Over time, as the situation on the ground evolved, YPD Karenland began moving toward long-term sustainability.
Today, the program continues to operate through fundraising efforts led by YPD Karenland itself. These funds help maintain transportation, medical supplies, and volunteer training, ensuring the clinic can continue serving the community without interruption.
A Commitment to Protecting Community Health
At its heart, the Mobile Clinic Support Program represents compassion, resilience, and hope. By bringing medical care directly to conflict-affected villages, YPD Karenland provides life-saving support to people who otherwise have no access to treatment.
The program embodies the belief that everyone deserves basic healthcare, regardless of geography or circumstance. With the dedication of volunteers and the support of partners and donors, the mobile clinic continues to save lives and uplift communities during difficult times.

This training program helps young people and community members develop essential language skills in English and Thai. Through practical lessons and interactive activities, participants learn how to communicate effectively in everyday situations, from basic conversations to workplace interaction.
The goal is to equip learners with the confidence to engage with people from different backgrounds, access more opportunities for education and employment, and strengthen cross-cultural understanding. Whether for travel, study, or work, this course provides a strong foundation for building better communication skills and connecting with others beyond borders.
