YPD Karenland recently organized a vocational training program aimed at equipping participants from refugee camps with practical, income-generating skills. The training focused on teaching how to produce three traditional and valuable food products: jaggery, fermented mushrooms, and fried dried fish.
Participants were guided through each step of the process, learning both the techniques and the practical knowledge needed to produce these items independently. The goal of the training was not only to transfer skills but also to empower participants to apply what they have learned in their own communities.
All participants come from refugee camps, where job opportunities are extremely limited. By learning these simple yet valuable vocational skills, they can begin to explore small business opportunities and generate income for themselves and their families.
These skills are not only useful in the present but can also serve as a foundation for their future, helping them build resilience and independence in uncertain circumstances.
Jaggery (Unrefined Cane Sugar)

Participants learned how to extract juice from sugarcane, boil it until it thickens, and then pour it into molds to cool and harden into solid blocks. This traditional process produces a natural sweetener that can be sold or served to guests.
Fermented Mushrooms

The training covered how to prepare mushrooms by tearing them into small pieces, steaming them, then mixing them with rice and simple ingredients before wrapping them in banana leaves. Over time, the mixture naturally ferments, developing a sour flavor and extending its shelf life.
Fried Dried Fish

Participants learned techniques for frying dried fish to extend its shelf life while keeping it flavorful. This popular dish also offers strong potential for small-scale business opportunities.
The participants expressed great enthusiasm and joy throughout the training. For many, this was a valuable opportunity to learn new skills that they had never experienced before. The hands-on approach made the learning process both practical and enjoyable, leaving participants feeling more confident in their abilities.
At YPD Karenland, our mission is to support and uplift our community—especially those living in refugee camps. While financial resources may be limited, we believe that sharing knowledge and skills is a powerful way to create lasting impact.
This training is a small but meaningful step toward empowering individuals, strengthening community resilience, and opening new pathways for livelihood opportunities.
YPD Karenland remains committed to continuing similar initiatives that provide practical support and capacity-building for communities in need. By investing in people and their potential, we hope to contribute to a stronger, more self-reliant future.
