YPD Karenland recently delivered a Mine Risk Education (MRE) training to a community living amid ongoing conflict, aiming to equip residents with essential knowledge to protect themselves and their children from the dangers of landmines and other explosive threats.

As conflict continues to affect many areas in Karen State, the risk of landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) remains a serious threat to community safety. In response to these urgent needs, YPD Karenland conducted a Mine Risk Education (MRE) training for a village currently located in a high-risk zone.

The session was held in a community situated directly within the conflict-affected area, where residents face daily uncertainty and potential exposure to hidden mines on the ground. With limited access to safety information, many villagers—especially children—are vulnerable to accidents that can result in severe injury or death.

During the visit, YPD Karenland provided an interactive awareness session, sharing vital knowledge on:

  • how to identify signs of mine-contaminated areas,
  • safe behaviors to avoid explosive hazards,
  • what to do when a suspicious object is found, and
  • how families can teach children to stay safe during conflict.

The training emphasized practical, life-saving information in simple and accessible ways so that community members of all ages could understand and remember the key messages.

YPD Karenland hopes that this initiative will increase awareness and prevent accidents, empowering villagers to make safer decisions as they navigate their daily surroundings. By filling the gap in knowledge, the team aims to help protect as many lives as possible in areas where danger is often unseen.

As conflict continues, Mine Risk Education remains a crucial tool in promoting community safety and resilience.
